1A hoops: Arickaree remains unbeaten

The Arickaree boys basketball team still is undefeated as it heads into the second weekend of 2024.

The Bison are 8-0 after two wins last week, and are No. 4 in the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index for Class 1A. The Index will be used to seed the postseason field.

Arickaree hosted Peetz this past Wednesday, is at Hi-Plains today, January 12, and at Flagler on Friday.

The Bison returned to action after the Christmas break last week with two home games. First up was an 80-14 shellacking of Deer Trail last Thursday. They led 32-2 by the end of the first quarter.

Dillon Noletubby had 17 points and five steals, Jake King 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, Bradley Hermes 11 points and four steals, Austin Wright eight points and nine rebounds, Yarin Quinteros eight points and five rebounds, Jorge Ramos four points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists, Zed Craig two points, and Luis Machado two points.

The Bison were home again Friday, handing Fleming a 65-28 loss. They again jumped out to a big lead, 22-4 after the first quarter and 39-5 by halftime.

King had 24 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds, Ramos 10 points and four steals, Noletubby nine points, four steals and three assists, Wright seven points, nine rebounds and four steals, Nic Hermes four points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, Zarron Skubal four points and six rebounds, Craig three points, Wyatt Sperry two points and two assists, and Quinteros two points and two rebounds.

OTIS BOYS

The Otis High School boys basketball team will be looking to build a winning streak this weekend.

The Bulldogs are 3-3 with Idalia visiting on Friday, followed by a trip to Caliche on Saturday. They are No. 23 in the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index for Class 1A.

Otis returned from the Christmas break last Friday with a 65-24 win at Bethune. The Bulldogs led 23-4 by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Statistics were not available.

LONE STAR BOYS

Lone Star’s boys basketball team has the weekend off after resuming its season last week.

The Longhorns are at Weldon Valley on Tuesday, January 16. They entered this week 3-4 after beating Bethune 38-23 last Saturday. They fell to 3-5 with a 62-33 loss at Briggsdale. and are No. 37 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index for Class 1A.

The Longhorns led just 14-11 at halftime last Saturday at home against Bethune, but eventually pulled away in the second half. Lone Star statistics were not available.

LONE STAR GIRLS

The Lone Star girls basketball team is looking to stick around for a bid to the Class 1A postseason after returning to action last week.

The Longhorns were 4-3 after last Saturday’s home win over Bethune, but fell to 4-4 after a 64-31 loss at Briggsdale this past Monday. They have the weekend off before traveling to Weldon Valley on Tuesday, January 16. They are No. 20 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index, which will be used to seed the postseason field.

Lone Star led Bethune 25-8 at halftime last week, then held the Bobcats to five points in the second half in a 50-13 win. Lone Star statistics were not available.

OTIS GIRLS

Otis High School’s girls basketball team has its work cutout as the 2024 portion of the season has begun.

The Bulldogs returned to action last Friday with a 38-23 win at Bethune to improve to 2-4 overall. They entered this week No. 24 in the 1A CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index. They host Idalia on Friday, then travel to Caliche on Saturday.

Otis led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter last Friday at Bethune, then did enough to pull away from the Bobcats. Lydia Willeke had nine points and six steals, Alli Hornung seven points, 14 rebounds and four steals, Aedyn Tribelhorn six points, 11 rebounds, five assists and six steals, Layce Perry six points, 11 rebounds and four steals, Madelyn Willeke five pints and three rebounds, Madison Reynolds foru points and four rebounds, and Raya Routh one point and two rebounds.

ARICKAREE GIRLS

The Arickaree girls basketball team is looking to stick around in the race for a postseason berth as the 2023-24 season has resumed.

The Bison split their first two games coming out of the break to sit at 4-4 overall, and No. 20 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index. They hosted Peetz on Wednesday of this week, and are at Hi-Plains on Friday and at Flagler on Saturday.

Arickaree hosted Deer Trail last Thursday in the first game of 2024, cruising to a 54-20 win. Raeya Schrock had 22 points and two rebounds, Janiya Smith 15 points, four steals and three assists, Janice Kalcevic eight points and three steals, Lilly Monat five points and eight rebounds, Keyli Vazquez two points and four rebounds, Julissa Quinteros two points, seven rebounds and four assists, Paytin Villarreal four rebounds and three steals, and Gabby Hermes four assists, and Liz Ramos three rebounds and two steals.

The Bison then hosted Fleming on Saturday, losing 38-22 after falling behind by eight in the first quarter. Schrock had six points and five rebounds, Smith five points and two rebounds, Monat three points, three rebounds and three steals, Villarreal two points and three steals, Kalcevic two points and two rebounds, and Quinteros two points and eight rebounds.
