The Yuma High School boys golf team will tee off its season Tuesday at the Resurrection Christian Invitational held at Raindance National Golf Club in Windsor.
Head coach Benjamin Weathers said this week’s qualifying rounds set up juniors Alexander Weathers, Orly Lynch and Charlie Oestman on the varsity foursome for the first tournament, joined by freshman Jagger Lungwitz. He outlasted freshman Kyce Huwa and sophomore Braxton Metcalfe in a three-way playoff for the final spot.
Coach Weathers said the team’s first focus is on four-time defending league champion Wray.
“I believe we have a really good chance at giving them a run for the title this season,” he said. “ We are going to be a very deep team, and I will be able to get most of the top eight players into three or more varsity events. Which will be great for experience going into next season.”
Alexander Weathers, who shot a 78 in the qualifier, will be looking to win the league individual title and qualify for the state tournament for the third straight year. The coach said Lynch and Oestman should be able to make a strong bid to qualify for state.
Carter Benish and Gavin Price are the two seniors on the team. Juniors are Lynch, Weathers, Oestman and Esteban Ovalle. Metcalfe is the only sophomore, and freshmen making their debut are Liam Glanz, Kyce Huwa, Lungwitz, and Ben Oestman.
“We have a great group of kids that want to be really good golfers and are willing to put in the work every day to get better,” Weathers said. “If we do that every day throughout the season, this will be a fun, exciting and special year.”
