Early enrollment numbers indicate positive trend

Early returns are showing a positive trend for Yuma School District-1 enrollment.

Superintendent Jim Fraley shared unofficial numbers during the Yuma-1 Board of Education meeting Monday night.

Enrollment figures tend to fluctuate, and the official enrollment count for state equalization funding will not take place until October.

However, the first day of school showed enrollment being up eight students in grades K-12 compared to 2025, 753 to 745.

Morris Elementary showed a decrease of 10 students, being at 280 last week compared to 290 in 2025. Yuma Middle School was up 12 students, from 233 last year to 245 last week. Yuma High School was a positive six, from 222 up to 228 last week.

Yuma-1’s enrollment has been steadily declining the past several years, so the early numbers show a promising reversal.

Fraley also shared staffing in relation to student enrollment. There are a total of 126 staff for the 2026-27 school year. There are 69 certified staff, encompassing teachers, principals and superintendent; 48 classified staff, including paraeducators, custodians, secretaries, registrars and others, and; nine professional staff, such as HR, financial officer and such.

Depending on the school, the number of students per adult ranges from seven to nine. As for classroom size per teacher, it averages 12.9 students per classroom.

Yuma-1 is nearing the end of the second week of its school year.
