Early enrollment figures indicate a decrease in Yuma School District-1’s student population.
Numbers provided by the district earlier this week showed enrollment of 874 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, compared to an early count last year of 899, the final official count last year was 906.
Early enrollment figures are tricky in that it changes frequently until the official count is completed later in the fall for state funding purposes. However, it still indicates which way it is heading.
While a drop from last year and 2019, the early count still is well above the 2018 early count of 846.
This year’s enrollment count for K-12 is 810, compared to 846 in 2020, 828 in 2019, 786 in 2018, 780 in 2017 and 775 in 2016.
One likely factor for the decrease is losing the large 2021 graduating class that had more than 70 students.
Overall, enrollment remains fairly steady with 10 of the 14 grades, including Pre-K, with more than 60 students. The eighth grade is the largest class with 73 students. The other four grades are in the 50s, the smallest being this year’s senior class currently sitting at 52.
Yuma High School’s early enrollment shows 254 students, a decrease of 16 from last year’s early count of 270. The early count was 235 in 2017 and just 219 in 2016.
YHS’s enrollment keeps it at the upper end of the enrollment range for some sports, particularly for volleyball and boys and girls basketball. The state is in the second year of the usual two-year cycle, so classifications parameters will be set again by CHSAA’s Legislative Council later this school year.
The YHS enrollment breaks down as follows: Ninth grade, 69, 10th grade 69, 11th grade 64, and 12th grade 52.
Yuma Middle School, grades 5-8, shows an early enrollment of 255, slightly down from last year’s early enrollment figure of 263. The figure was 259 in 2019, 255 in 2018, 243 in 2017, and 267 in 2016.
The YMS breakdown is as follows: Fifth grade, 62; sixth grade, 66; seventh grade, 54, and; eighth grade 73.
Morris Elementary School, grades K-4, shows an early enrollment of 301, down from last year’s early count of 313. That figure was 319 in 2019, 300 in 2018, 302 in 2017, and 289 in 2016.
The early figures show Kindergarten with 61 students, first grade with 68, second grade with 54, third grade with 61, and fourth grade with 57.
Little Indians Preschool shows an enrollment of 64. The early count last year was 53, and it was 62 in 2019.
Lone Star
Early enrollment counts at Lone Star indicate a slight decrease in the student population, with 126 in grades K-12, compared to the early count last year of 140.
Lone Star’s breakdown by grade is as follows: Kindergarten, six; first grade, nine; second grade, seven; third grade, seven; fourth grade, six; fifth grade, 11; sixth grade, nine; seventh grade, 15; eighth grade, 13; ninth grade, seven; 10th grade, 16; 11th grade, 10, and; 12th grade, 10.
Liberty
Liberty School is reporting 64 students in preschool through 12th grade based on early enrollment counts. Liberty’s enrollment is holding steady as its early county in 2020 showed 65 students.
Liberty’s breakdown is as follows: Preschool, 11; Kindergarten, three; first grade, four; second grade, nine; third grade, four; fourth grade, three; fifth grade, eight; sixth grade, two; seventh grade, nine; eighth grade, two; ninth grade, one; 10th grade, three; 11th grade, two, and; 12th grade, two.
