Police chief moving on

Yuma Police Chief Jerry Thompson is resigning to take a job in the private sector.

“I have accepted a position with a law enforcement software development company and look forward to this next chapter,” Thompson told the Pioneer.

His final day was uncertain earlier this week, but he said he hoped to have a confirmed date at this past Tuesday’s Yuma City Council meeting.

The council met in executive session during that meeting, then appointed Sgt. Curtis Witte as the interim chief after reconvening in open session.

Thompson was appointed chief in November 2019. His first tenure with the Yuma Police Department was from 2007 to 2010. He left for other law enforcement jobs, then returned in April 2017.

The council will determine later how to go about searching for a new police chief.
