Roger Koenig was born November 19, 1938 in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Mabel (Wenzl) and Theodore H. Koenig, the fourth of seven children. He attended country grade school first through eighth grades near Plymouth, Nebraska and went to Beatrice High School ninth through eleventh grade. Then the family moved to Yuma the summer of 1955 where he finished his last year of high school, graduating in 1956. Continued to work on the farm and then joined the Colorado Air National Guard in April of 1957, was discharged August 24, 1962, during which time he was on active duty from October 1, 1961 to August 24, 1962, while the Berlin Conflict was going on.
On October 7, 1962 he married Lucille Corman. Their first son, Jeffrey, was born in 1963 and second son, Lynn, Was born in 1967.
He enjoyed farming and took pride in the well done fields of corn, wheat and pinto beans. He especially loved being able to have both sons and grandchildren take over the farming when they were old enough. He also loved to fly and owned and flew many different airplanes over his lifetime and also hosted several of the very first Old Threshers events at his farm. As his eyes grew dimmer and Parkinson’s took over his body, he could no longer participate in all the things he loved doing, but took it all with dignity and never complained.
His grandchildren were a joy to him. He loved showing them things that helped them learn about the farm or flying or whatever he could encourage them with.
