Boys golf season on the back nine

Yuma High School’s boys golf team is nearing the end of its league tournaments.

The Outlaws are at the Akron Invitational on Friday, and travel to the Wray Invitational on Monday. The league consists of Yuma, Akron, Arickaree, Burlington, Holyoke, Liberty, Limon, Fleming, Flagler, Stratton, Sedgwick County and Wray. The league championship will be September 25 at Sky Ranch in Sterling.

Yuma went to Boomerang Golf Links in Greeley Wednesday for the Frontier Academy Invitational. The Outlaws shot a team score of 294. Alexander Weathers shot a 92, Braxton Metcalfe 98, and Orly Lynch 104.

They competed in the Sterling Invitational later last week, finishing with a 280 team score. Weathers shot an 86 to lead the way, while Lynch shot a 94, Metcalfe 100, and Carter Benish 117

They were back on the course this past Monday at the Fort Morgan Invitational. Weathers shot an 88, Lynch 96 and Benish 114.

Charlie Oestman and Esteban Ovalle played in the Sterling JV Invitational last week. Oestman shot a 118, and Ovalle 122.

Weathers enters the season’s final weeks in the running to win the league’s individual title. He also is on pace to qualify for the Class 2A State Tournament in early October. Golf no longer has state-qualifying regional tournaments, opting instead to qualify the field based on performances throughout the season.
