Yuma High School boys golf team’s season is heading down the fairway.
The Outlaws have three tournaments in the bag already, including this past Tuesday’s Limon Invitational. They are at the Eaton Invitational today, August 20, and will travel to the Strasburg Invitational, which will be in Aurora, on Monday.
Yuma opened the season last Tuesday, August 11, at the Resurrection Christian Invitational held at Raindance National in Windsor. Coach Benjamin Weathers shared the course is very long and unforgiving. The golfers walked just under 10 miles over 18 holes.
This is the fourth year the Outlaws have played in the Rez Christian Invitational, and the team score has never been under 300. Last Tuesday’s foursome nearly pulled it off, shooting a team score 301.
Alexander Weathers led the way with a 97, while Jagger Lungwitz shot a 100, Kyce Huwa 104 and Braxton Metcalfe 109.
A different crew was taken to the Stratton Invitational last Friday. Orly Lynch shot a 95, Gavin Price 104, Esteban Ovalle 118 and Liam Glanz 121.
Weathers took a varsity foursome to the Limon Invitational this past Tuesday. The day’s highlight was A. Weathers carding a hole-in-one. He did it on a 215-yard par 3 using a hybrid 3-wood. It was the first ace during coach Weathers’ 12 years as coach.
A. Weathers ended up finishing sixth with an 85, while Lynch came in with a 97, Lungwitz 104 and Charlie Oestman 106. The Outlaws finished with a 286, good enough for ninth place in the 16-team field, and the first time they have broken the 300 mark in this early season.
