Yuma High School’s boys golf is down to its last tournament.
The Outlaws have one week to prepare for the Northeastern League Championships at Sky Ranch in Sterling on Thursday, September 25.
After that, the Class 2A Boys Golf State Championships in early October is all that remains. Sophomore Alexander Weathers is well on his way to qualifying for the state tournament, which now is based on a golfer’s performance throughout the season instead of a regional tournament.
The Outlaws foursome had a great run at the Akron Invitational last Friday. Sophomore Orly Lynch carded the lowest round of his career with an 86. Weathers matched him with an 86 of his own. Freshman Braxton Metcalfe also carded the lowest round of his career with a 93, and sophomore Charlie Oestman came in with a 104.
The Outlaws had a season-low team score of 265.
They were at the Wray Invitational on Monday. Coach Benjamin Weathers noted there tends to be ups and downs with a young team, and the Wray tourney ended up being pretty rough.
“The wind was blowing and the pin placements were in very difficult spots,” Weathers related. “I don’t know how many times I saw kids putt the ball right off of the green.”
Weathers shot a 94, Lynch 101, Metcalfe 106 and Oestman 107, for a team score of 301.
The team went to the Strasburg Invitational at Murphy Creek Golf Course on Wednesday of this week. Look for results in next week’s edition.
