Boys golf staying on the move

The Yuma High School boys golf team continues to hit the course as the calendar turns to September, the final month of the regular season.
Varsity and JV players are in Sterling on Friday for the Chad Godfrey Invitational, and travel to Boomerang Golf Links in Greeley on Wednesday for the Frontier Academy Invitational.
Yuma went to the Bobcat Invitational in Estes Park last Thursday. Its team score was 320, finishing 14th in the team standings. Kyle Schuetz led the Yuma foursome with a 101. Brodie Castillo finished with 109, Kaleb Jones 110 and Noah Hansen 115. Three JV players also went as Ty Remmich shot a 117, Fynn Sims 119 and Jayden Serl 124.
Yuma’s golfers were back at it the next day, competing in the Holyoke Invitational. Yuma finished third in the 10-team field with a 284, just eight strokes behind team champion Wray. JJ Ward placed fourth individually with an 89. Jack Blecha was 10th with a 96, Jake Hagemeier finished with a 99, and Castillo 104. Senior Ethan Gonzales played in the JV tournament, shooting a 104 in his first-ever tournament, plus carding his first birdie.
“We wanted to give Wray a run for the team title and we did,” coach Benjamin Weathers said. “Wray was just able to close out the round better than we did.”
Yuma was in the Wray Invitational this past Tuesday. The team shot a 303 to finish in the standings. Ward placed sixth with an 86, while Jones had a 108, Hagemeier 109 and Will Noble 112.
