Boys wrestlers hosting Big O Duals

Yuma High School’s boys wrestlers will close out the 2022-23 regular season in the friendly confines.
YHS will be hosting the Big O Duals, Saturday, with several schools participating. The tournament is named in honor of the late Terry Oestman, a long-time assistant coach at YHS whose sons were successful wrestlers at the school.
Scheduled to compete in the Big O are Chatfield, Sedgwick County/Fleming, Burlington, Dayspring Christian, Resurrection Christian and Holyoke.
The grapplers’ next action will be next weekend in the Class 2A Region 1 Tournament.
Yuma had a home date last Thursday in The Pit, dropping a 45-30 dual decision to a tough squad from Sedgwick County/Fleming.
Sedgwick County/Fleming scored the dual’s first 35 points, with three wins on the mat and three forfeits, before Yuma finally got on the board.
That came at 150 pounds, where Trey Stegman earned a win by fall in 2 minutes, 27 seconds over Jack Bornhoft.
Yuma closed out the dual with two more wins on the mat.
Kallen Blach got a pin in 1:40 over Christian Lopez at 215, and Peyton Wells got a pin in 1:09 over Caiden Smith at 285. Getting forfeit wins for Yuma were Deacon Brown at 175, and Kevin Hermosillo at 190. Yuma lost by forfeit at 106, 138, and 144, and lost on the mat at 113, 120, 126 and 157.
Yuma’s wrestlers competed the next day in the McCook Duals in Nebraska
They did tie 36-36 in the dual with McCook. Hermosillo won by fall (1:50) at 183, Blach by fall (2:56_ at 195, Wells by fall (44 seconds) at 220,and Blake Stivers by fall (25 seconds) at 113. Brian Coyle got a forfeit win at 152, and Jiovani Perez at 120.
Yuma had a tough time against North Platte, losing 73-3. Yuma’s only win was Blach’s 12-8 decision at 195. Yuma lost the eight other matches decided on the mat, and gave up five forfeits.
The former Indians lost the dual to Ogallala, 60-24. All of Yuma’s points came by forfeit, Stegman at 152, Hermosillo 182, Blach 195 and Wells 220. Yuma forfeited five weights, and lost five on the mat.
The Yuma boys nearly got Alliance, losing a 42-36 decision.
Perez got a 55-second pin at 113. Stegman won by fall in 1:59 at 160. Zeke Martinez won by fall in 1:25 at 170. Hermosillo got a pin in 1:36 at 182, and Wells won by fall in 1:19 at 220. Blach got a forfeit win at 195. Yuma lost on the mat at 113, 126 and 152, and gave up forfeits at 106, 132, 138, 145 and 285.
Yuma closed out the day with a 55-24 team loss to Gothenburg.
Perez won by fall in 1:53 at 120 pounds. Stegman got a pin at the 3:31 mark at 152. Martinez got a quick 47-second pin at 170. Blach earned a pin at the 4:22 mark at 195. Yuma lost on the mat at 126, 160, 182, 220 and 113. Yuma gave up forfeit losses at 132, 138, 145, 285 and 106.
