Jean was born on March 5, 1934, in St. Francis, KS, to Fred and Edith (Morris) Churchill. She graduated from Loveland High School, in Loveland, Colorado in 1952. She married Darrell Whittington at the Loveland Methodist Church on March 22, 1956. To this union, three children were born: Lynda Jean, Susan Ranee, and Dale James. While Darrell was farming south of Fleming and going to CSU, Jean was always able to obtain good office jobs. She was gifted in so many ways. She was a wonderful contralto singer who was a bit famous in Fleming for her amazing solo rendition of “O Holy Night” every Christmas. She sang for weddings and funerals and every Sunday morning in the church choir. She had a ceramic shop in her basement for numerous years that many friends from the surrounding communities spent several hours each week.
Jean was a gifted seamstress, gardener, scrapbooker, knitter, embroider, jewelry maker along with making many beautiful stained-glass pieces. She was a gourmet cook and amazing baker who was famous for her pies. She was a wonderful hostess who always had an open door, a cup of coffee or iced tea, and whatever was fresh out of the oven for anyone who stopped by. She belonged to a county extension club, Hello Neighbor Club, and Red Hatter Society. She held numerous positions on the Fleming United Methodist church board and represented them at their annual conference for several years. She enjoyed being on the Fleming Library Board and having access to read all the latest books as she was an avid reader.
In December 2020, Darrell and Jean moved to The Harmony Home assisted living in Yuma, Colorado. The social butterfly that she was, thrived having easier access to music activities along with leading a Bible study and evening reading group.
