Full speed ahead with Yuma girls wrestling

It is time to get going for the Yuma High School girls wrestling team.
“Almost everybody is going to be able to wrestle this weekend,” head coach Brandon Newton said. “We should fill every weight except heavyweight.”
Yuma opens the 2022-23 season Friday with a dual at Fort Morgan, then will compete in a tournament at Arapahoe High School on Saturday.
Newton said there were 17 grapplers at practice on Monday, including a few from Otis. Most are new to the sport, but several return from previous seasons.
“Our more experienced girls, I think it’s about six, they’re working real hard and leading the way. These other girls are catching on.”
The roster shows Myka McDonald wrestling at 100 pounds, Kenya Arvizo at 105, Chloe Smith 110, Ashley Marshall at 120, Sakari Shields at 125, Destiny Henderson at 130, Abril Montes de Oca at 145, and Danika Dischner at 190. There also is Peyton Hynson at 110, Jaslenn Rodriguez at 125, Laura Estrada at 130 and Ivana Reyes at 190.
Newton noted the team will not fill as many of the weights as he originally thought as there are a few that will not be able to wrestle this weekend. A full list of those on the team was not available at press time.
“Hopefully within the next couple of weeks we can fill more of the weights,” he said.
“We’re working them really hard and they’re still (at practice) and seem to be having fun,” Newton said. “I’m excited for this weekend.”
Currently the girls do not have any home matches scheduled.
