Yuma High School’s volleyball team will be plenty busy over the next week.
The Outlaws will host Brush on Friday afternoon, then compete in the Akron Tournament on Saturday. That is followed by a trip Tuesday to Class 1A No. 1 Merino. They also were at Caliche this past Tuesday.
On Saturday, Yuma will play Stratton at approximately 10 a.m., followed immediately by playing Holyoke. The fifth-place, third-place and championship matches will follow.
Yuma is 2-7 after dropping a pair of matches of Class 3A opponents last weekend.
The Outlaws hosted Forge Christian, highly ranked in 3A, last Friday in The Pit. They were able to get one win against the Fury, but lost the match in four sets, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-18.
Yuma served 88 percent, which was better than the Fury, but the visitors had 18 aces to 11 for Yuma. The Fury also had 19 more kills, 46-27.
Lindsey Hermosillo was 18-19 at the line with two aces, Lauren Gonzales 13-17 with two aces, Taryn Sheffield 11-11 with four aces, Bailey Nighswonger 12-12, Aubrey Black 11-13, and Berkley Nighswonger 8-11 with three aces.
Berkley Nighswonger recorded 10 kills, Sheffield five, Gonzales four, Hermosillo four, Novalee Schuetz two and Bailey Nighswonger two. Bailey Nighswonger had 16 setting assists, and Black nine.
The Outlaws made the trip to Sterling the next morning, dropping the match in three sets, 23-25, 21-25, 15-25.
Yuma’s serving was at 90 percent. Bailey Nighswonger was 21-21 with two aces, Hermosillo 8-10 with one ace, Gonzales 8-10, Black 6-6, Sheffield 6-7 with one ace, and Carolina Ross 5-5. Hermosillo had eight kills, Gonzales seven, Berkley Nighswonger four, Schuetz three, and Bailey Nighswonger two. Bailey Nighswonger had 13 assists, Schuetz three, Black two and Hermosillo two.
