Several state champions among local track athletes

Yuma High School’s boys track and field team put forth a Top 10 effort at the 2A CHSAA Track and Field Championships, last week in Lakewood.

The Outlaws finished eighth in the final team standings with 32.25 points. Peyton won the team title with 89 points. The Yuma girls finished

The state meet began on a high point for the Outlaws last Thursday.

Senior Cristian Duarte flew 21-foot-10.75 to win the long jump. He also placed fifth in the 200-meter prelims to qualify for the final. Bridger Lynch placed sixth in the 110-meter prelims to reach the final. The 4-by-200 relay team of Jio Perez, Lynch, Iann Duran and Noe Quezada made it to the final by placing ninth in the prelims. Perez just missed qualifying in the 400, placing 10th in the prelims.

On the girls side, Jordan Glanz cleared 4-foot-6 in the high jump, and the 800 sprint medley team finished 17th in the prelims.

Yuma’s boys scored points in the pole vault on Friday. Lynch cleared 12-9 to place third, and Perez cleared 12-3 for eighth. Duarte was back at the jump pit, placing fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 42-11. Perez, Lynch, Duran and Quezada picked up a point by placing ninth in the 4-by-200 final with a time of 1:34.11.

Chloe Smith picked up a point for the girls, clearing 8-10 in the pole vault to place ninth.

The girls 4-by-100 foursome of Smith, Aubrey Black, Caddis Robinson and Layla Glanz just missed qualifying for the finals, finishing 10th in the prelims, 3/100ths of a second out of ninth.

Saturday concluded the state meet.

Caddis Robinson scored a point for the girls by placing ninth in the long jump with a distance of 15-4.5.

Lynch improved on his prelim time by placing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.85 seconds.

Edwin Munoz finally got to compete, placing eighth in the high jump with a height of 5-10, while Duarte placed ninth at 5-8. Duarte also placed ninth in the 200 final with a time of 23.06 seconds.

Lone Star

The Lone Star track and field athletes definitely had some memorable moments at the Class 1A CHSAA Track and Field Championships last week at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

The Lone Star boys had an impressive showing, finishing fifth in the final team standings with 46 points. Cheyenne Wells won the team title with 64 points.

The girls team scored 16.5 points to finish 21st in the team standings. Merino won the 1A title with 106 points.

Lone Star started off with a bang on Thursday. Wyatt Cochran won the 1A title in shot put with a heave of 44-10.25. Grant Kuntz also placed eighth in the long jump with a distance of 18-9.5.

Jade Kuntz repeated as the 1A girls pole vault champion with a height of 10-0. In fact, all of the girls’ points came in the pole vault as Peytyn Kuntz tied for fourth at 8-9, and Katie Etl ninth at 7-9.

Cochran competed in the discus on Friday, placing sixth with a distance of 121-9.

Anderson Weathers did not compete until Saturday, but made the most of his time in the arena with three second-place efforts. He finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.16 seconds, and the 300 hurdles in 42.33 seconds. He also placed second in the pole vault by clearing 13-7. G. Kuntz tacked on more points by placing fourth with a height of 13-1.

Otis

Otis High School brought home some state placers from the Class 1A CHSAA Track and Field Championships last week in Lakewood.

The boys had a Top 10 effort, finishing ninth in the team standings with 35 points. Cheyenne Wells won the 1A title with 64. The girls had 8.5 points to finish 23rd in the team standings. Merino won the girls 1A title with 106 points.

The action started last Thursday as Sawyer Packer placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 19-3. On the girls side, Madelyn Willeke tied for fourth in the pole vault by clearing 8-9, and Lydia Willeke was eighth at 8-3.

Packer was back at the jump pits on Friday, placing fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 40-11.75. Jacob Perry competed in the discus, whipping the sphere 122-11 for fifth place.

The 4-by-200 team of Emiliano Varela, Cambric Klinzmann, Mitchell Stivers and Carter Wells placed third with a time of 1:35.29.

The 4-by-100 team of Varela, Klinzmann, Tayshaun Thomas and Wells placed second on Saturday with a time of 45.9 seconds.

Also on Saturday, Jayce Ballah cleared 11-7 for fifth in the pole vault, and Alex Bailey was ninth at 8-7.

For the girls, M. Willeke placed ninth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.3 seconds.

Arickaree

The Arickaree boys track and field athletes brought home a champion and a top 20 team finish at the Class 1A CHSAA Track and Field Championships, last week at Jefferson County Stadium.

The Bison finished in a three-way tie for 19th in the final team standings with 18 points, along with Prairie and DeBeque. Cheyenne Wells won the 1A title with 64 points.

They did most of their business on Friday.

Austin Wright emerged as a 1A champion, whipping the discus 136-11 for the win. He also placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.94.

The 4-by-800 foursome of Jorge Ramos, Keith Page, Zarron Skubal and Wright tacked on more points by placing seventh with at time of 9:14.66. On Saturday, the 4-by-400 team placed ninth with a time of 3:55.5.

McKenna Jesse competed for the girls in the high jump, clearing 4-6 but not placing in the top nine.
