YHS boys golf has teed off

The Yuma High School boys golf team opened its season with back-to-back tournaments earlier this week.

The Outlaws hosted the season-opening Yuma Invitational at Indian Hills Golf Course on Monday. They finished eighth in the 14-school field with a 293 team score. Sophomore Alexander Weathers led the Outlaws with an 85 and finished with a fifth-place medal. Junior Carter Benish shot a 101. Sophomore Orly Lynch and freshman Braxton Metcalfe each shot a 107 in their first varsity events. Charlie Oestman, a sophomore, rounded out the Yuma team with a 109.

Coach Benjamin Weathers thanked Indian Hills for hosting the tournament, and to the members that allowed their carts to be used by the coaches. He also noted the golfers’ parents put together a lunch for more than 80 people and it was greatly appreciated.

The Outlaws had a 4 a.m. wakeup call the next day as they went to Windsor to play in the Resurrection Christian Invitational at Raindance National. Weathers said it is the longest course in the United States. After walking five miles on Monday, and then 10 on Tuesday, the golfers ran out of steam after starting out well.

Weathers had two birdies while shooting a 94. Metcalfe made a 15-foot par putt while finishing with a 106. Benish shot a 112, and Lynch 122. They finished 28th with a 312 team score.
