YHS girls ready for the unknown

The Yuma High School girls basketball team will know a little more after this week.

“This time of year there are no scouting reports,” coach Jeremy Robinson said. “You just kind of go off of last year. In my mind it just boils down to who is going to outwork the other.”

The Outlaws opened the 2025-26 season this past Tuesday at Sterling. They had a great start as they cruised to a 53-36 win.

Their home opener is Friday against rival Wray, followed by a trip the next morning to Colorado Springs to play The Vanguard School.

Yuma led 20-5 by the end of the first quarter at Sterling. The Tigers cut into the deficit a bit in the middle quarters, but the Outlaws closed on a 12-4 run.

Taryn Sheffield had 20 points and five rebounds, Bailey Nighswonger 14 points and 10 rebounds, Carolina Ross nine points, five rebounds, six steals and three assists, Aubrey Black four points and three steals, Berkley Nighswonger four points, and Lauren Gonzales two points and four rebounds.

The Outlaws return nearly everyone from last year’s squad that advanced to the 3A regional finals. This will be the program’s last season in 3A before dropping down again to 2A.

Robinson said he essentially has six starters, possibly adjusting the starting five depending upon the opponent. Those six would be seniors Bailey Nighswonger, Lauren Gonzales, and Caroline Ross, and juniors Berkley Nighswonger, Taryn Sheffield and Aubrey Black. Junior Layla Glanz also is in the rotational mix, along with sophomores Laisha Loya, Keylen Quezada, and Sadie Mosenteen.
