Yuma baseball split ’26 opener

It was an uneven season opener for the Yuma High School baseball team Tuesday afternoon at a windswept Outlaws Lair.

The Outlaws split a doubleheader with Merino, 3-6, 11-6 for the opening salvo on the 2026 season.

Yuma hosts Caliche Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. for a Varsity/JV double dip.

Yuma struck first in the opener. The game was scoreless in the bottom of the third when Reyli Trejo hit a double to center. Merino then misplayed Stevie Seward’s grounder, allowing Trejo to score.

It was still 1-0 when Merino erupted for four runs in the top of the fifth. The rally included three walks, two singles and a double.

The Outlaws got back into it in the home half. Trejo led off with a double to deep left field. Seward lined a double down the left field line. Seward stole third and scored on Marvin Duarte’s groundout to make it 4-3.

However, the Rams came right back with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the sixth.

Yuma left the bases loaded in the home half, and had two singles in the seventh but could not capitalize.

Brodie Kallweit pitched the first four innings for Yuma. He extended his scoreless inning streak to 16 dating back to last season, exiting with a 1-0 lead. He struck out eight and walked four without allowing a hit. However, the Outlaws ran into trouble after that, and never could get going on offense.

Trejo had two doubles and scored two runs. Seward a double, one RBI and one run, Duarte one hit and one RBI, Lennox Huwa one hit, Kallweit one hit and Christian Thomson one hit.

The Outlaws salvaged the split with an 11-6 win in the nightcap.

Yuma again scored first with a bases-loaded walk scoring Jose Mario Ross in the first. Thomson’s double scored Kallweit in the second for a 2-0 lead. Merino scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to cut the margin in half.

Rodriguez is great behind the plate, but also is salty on the hill. He threw the first six innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking one. Freshman Ty Weathers pitched the final inning.

Wario had the two-run homer and scored two runs, Thomson three hits with two doubles, two RBI and tow runs, Huwa a double among his two hits with one run, Kallweit two hits with a double and two runs, Trejo another double, two RBI and one run, Rodriguez two hits and one RBI, Pensado one run and one RBI, and Seward one one RBI.
