Yuma High School’s football team will play at home for five of its nine games in the 2022 season, but the home dates definitely are front loaded.
The football players are home for four of their first five contests, then close out the regular season with a four-game stretch including three away from Yuma.
Yuma’s non-conference schedule has three different opponents than last season. Burns, Wyoming, is the only one still on the slate as Yuma travels north on September 2. Yuma opened last season with a blowout win over Burns in Yuma.
Yuma opens the season at home August 25 against Sterling, the first time the two have met in a varsity football game in several years. The home boys host Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy on September 8, the first time schools have ever played each other. Yuma also hosts Brush on September 16. Like Sterling, it is the first time in several years the two have played a varsity football game.
Sterling posted a 3-6 record last year after making the 2A playoffs in 2020 and winning the state championship in 2019. Brush went 10-3 last season, losing to Eaton in the 2A semifinals. Banning Lewis, located in Colorado Springs, went 5-3 last season but did not make the playoffs. Banning Lewis plays in 1A like Yuma.
The gauntlet through the 1A North Central Conference begins at home September 30 against Wiggins.
Yuma plays at Burlington on October 7, at rival Wray on October 14, then host Holyoke on October 21 before closing out the regular season October 28 at Limon. All North Central teams but Burlington made the playoffs last season.
All Yuma games begin at 7 p.m. However, two games, Sterling on August 25, and Banning Lewis on September 8, are on a Thursday.
