Yuma girls hosting regional

The Pit is going to be rocking with wrestling Friday and Saturday.

Yuma High School again is hosting the girls Class 4A Region 2 Tournament.

Preliminary rounds on Friday begin at 4 p.m., and the wrestling resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. A total of 20 schools will be competing, including Yuma and Liberty.

Region 2 includes 4A No. 2 Sedgwick County/Fleming, and No. 4 Severance. Area schools include Wray, Brush, Burlington, Fort Morgan, Sterling and Wiggins. Canon City is the furthest school from Yuma.

“Our region is very tough this year,” coach Brandon Newton said. “We will have to come up with some big wins but that’s what we like to see. It’s exciting because regionals is going to a great turn out for spectators, The Pit is going to be a lot of fun!”

The Outlaws feature three who qualified for state last year, Danika Dischner, Gese Sanchez and Taelynn Robinson. Dischner will be competing at 235, Sanchez 190 and Robinson 100. Also wrestling for state berths will be Haley Smith at 105, Heidi Vargas 110, Mirella Flores 115, Kenya Arvizo 120, Daphani Allen 125, Luisa Palacios 130, Tehya McDonald 135, and Maurine Smith 155.

“Things are looking good as we approach this weekend,” Newton said. “Most of everyone is 100 percent. Dealing with just a couple injuries but shouldn’t be too detrimental to their wrestling abilities.”

The top four placers in each weight will qualify for the 4A tournament next Thursday through Saturday at Ball Arena in Denver.

“The girls understand they didn’t work hard all year just to qualify, they worked to get on the podium at state.” Newton said. “We should get four going for sure, and I’m hoping we come up with some big possible upsets and take at least six.”
