1A hoops: Otis boys hosting regional

Otis High School’s boys basketball team is the second seed in the 1A 32-team regional field.

The Bulldogs, 19-2, will host a four-team regional Friday and Saturday. They will play 31st-seed Hanover at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by 15th-seed Denver Waldorf taking on 18th-seed Arickaree, which likely has the shortest trip of any team in the 1A field.

The winners will meet in the Sweet 16 game Saturday at 2 p.m., with the winner of that advancing to the 1A Great 8 next week at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Hanover goes to Otis with a 12-9 record and on a two-game losing streak. Denver Waldorf is 13-8, and Arickaree is 14-9 after losing to Otis last Saturday in the NCL/YWKC Tournament first-place game in Sterling.

Otis concluded the regular season last week by winning that tournament title, and enters the postseason on a 17-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs began the NCL/YWKC Tournament earlier last week with a 58-30 win over Fleming. Charlie Kendrick had 22 points, six rebounds and five assists, Mitchell Stivers 10 points, four assists and three steals, Cambric Klinzmann 10 points and five rebounds, Grady Bechtle six points and eight rebounds, Gracen Bechtle four points, Travis Wood three points, Gavin Price two points, and Austin Hornung one point and four assists.

They were back in Sterling on Friday for the semifinals, winning 40-34 over Prairie after trailing by one entering the fourth quarter. Klinmann had 12 points and six rebounds, Stivers eight points, Gracen Bechtle seven points, Hornung six points, Kendrick five points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Grady Bechtle two points and nine rebounds.

Otis ran into WashCo rival Arickaree in the first place game Saturday at Sterling High School. The Bulldogs again had a strong fourth quarter to pull away to the 59-38 win. Kendrick had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, Stivers 13 points and three steals, Grady Bechtle 13 points and seven rebounds, Hornung seven points and three rebounds, Gracen Bechtle seven points and three assists, Klinmann five points and six rebounds, and Price one point.

ARICKAREE

Arickaree’s boys basketball does not have far to go for its 1A regional this weekend.

The Bison are the 18th seed in the 32-team field. They will make the short trip to Otis on Friday for a regional semifinal agaisnt 15th-seed Denver Waldorf at 7:30 p.m. Arickaree is 14-9 and Denver Waldorf 13-8. The teams played in Denver in late January, with the Bison suffering a close 51-48 loss.

Second-seed Otis, 19-2, plays Hanover in the other game Friday. The winners meet Saturday in the Sweet 16 at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to the 1A Great 8 next week at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

The Bison opened NCL/YWKC Tournament play earlier last week with a 49-47 win over Caliche in Sterling. They trailed by one entering the fourth in a game that was close throughout. Jake King had 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals, Austin Wright 16 points and five rebounds, Dillon Noletubby 10 points and nine rebounds, Zarron Skubal four points and four rebounds, Bradley Hermes two points, five assists and five steals, and Jorge Ramos four rebounds and three steals.

Arickaree was back in Sterling Friday for a semifinal, beating Idalia 50-32. King had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Noletubby 13 points and three rebounds, Wright 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals, Hermes three points and seven rebounds, Jackson Cordell two points, Skubal five rebounds, and Ramos five assists.

The win sent the Bison into Saturday’s first-place game against WashCo rival Otis, losing 59-38. Noletubby had 23 points and three rebounds, Wright six points and four rebounds, King three points and four assists, Hermes two points and three rebounds, Cordell two points and two rebounds, and Skubal two points and five rebounds.

LONE STAR

The Lone Star boys basketball team concluded its season last week with an 8-12 record.

The Longhorns beat Flagler 58-55 earlier last week in the NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling. Grant Kuntz had 36 points, six assists and eight steals, Anderson Weathers 13 points, Jesus Hermosillo eight points and nine rebounds, Jack Glenn one point, Owen Glenn three rebounds and Ian Pastor two rebounds.

Lone Star was back in Sterling on Friday, losing 51-39 to Prairie. Kuntz had 16 poitns, five rebounds and five assists, Weathers eight points and four rebounds, J. Glenn seven points, Hermosillo six points and four rebounds, and O. Glenn two points and three rebounds.

The Longhorns finished up Saturday with a 48-32 loss to Fleming. Kuntz had 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, Weathers nine points and 10 rebounds, J. Glenn seven points and two rebounds, Hermosillo six points and six rebounds, and O. Glenn two rebounds.

OTIS GIRLS

The Otis High School girls basketball team will not have to travel far for regional.

The Bulldogs will be headed to Idalia on Friday. They are the 18th seed with a 10-11 record, and will play 15th-seed Prairie at 3:30 p.m. Second-seed Idalia will play 31st-seed Weldon Valley at 2 p.m. The winners will meet in the Sweet 16 on Saturday at 1 p.m., with that winner advancing to the 1A Great 8 next week at the University of Northern Colorado.

Otis has played all three teams in its regional, beating Prairie just last week in the NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling. The Bulldogs beat Weldon Valley earlier in the season, and lost to Idalia twice.

They met Prairie in the NCL/YWKC consolation semifinal last Friday, cruising to a 50-27 win. Otis statistics were not available.

That put them into the fifth-place game Saturday against Caliche, losing a close one 47-44. The Bulldogs led by two entering the fourth quarter. Otis statistics were not available.

LONE STAR GIRLS

The Lone Star girls basketball team is heading to Seibert for its 1A regional this weekend.

The Longhorns are 12-10 and the 24th seed in the 32-team regional field. They will play ninth-seed DeBeque at 6:30 p.m. Friday at eighth-seed Hi-Plains, which plays 25th-seed Kim/Branson at 5 p.m. The winners meet in the Sweet 16 Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to the 1A Great 8 next week at the University of Northern Colorado.

Lone Star lost to Hi-Plains earlier this season, but has not played DeBeque or Kim/Branson.

The Longhorns finished the regular season last week in the NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling.

They played Bethune last Friday, winning 56-32 after racing out to a 29-6 lead in the first quarter. Jade Kuntz had 18 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, Peytyn Kuntz 11 pints, five steals and three assists, Aimee Trejo nine points and four rebounds, Emmalee Gailus six points, Paityn Forry four points, 10 rebounds and six assists, Katie Etl two points, Bryn Cook two points and three rebounds, Kaylee Coin two points, Emely Trejo two points and three rebounds, and Grace Cochran five rebounds.

Lone Star then beat Weldon Valley 52-34 on Saturday to go 3-0 in the round robin portion of the tournament. The Longhorns again raced out to an early lead, 17-6. J. Kuntz had 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals, P. Kuntz 16 points, four assists and four steals, A. Trejo five points and six rebounds, Cook five points and three steals, Cochran four points and eight rebounds, and Forry three points, seven rebounds and three assists.

ARICKAREE GIRLS

The Arickaree girls basketball team will be heading to Briggsdale for its 1A regional tournament.

The Bison are the 27th seed with an 8-15 record. They will play sixth-seed Briggsdale, 16-6, on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Caliche, the 11th seed, will play 22nd-seed Kit Carson at 7 p.m. The winners meet in the Sweet 16 Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to the 1A Great 8 next week at the University of Northern Colorado.

Arickaree finished the regular season last week in the NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling. The Bison lost last Friday 42-31 to Caliche. Ja’Niya Smith had 11 points and six rebounds, Clara Hermes 11 points, Raeya Schrock nine points and six rebounds, Janice Kalcevic three rebounds, and Gracie Monat two rebounds.

They lost 60-43 to Prairie on Saturday. Smith had 16 points, four rebounds and three assists, Schrock 15 points and five rebounds, Monat six points and three rebounds, Hermes three points and two rebounds, Kalcevic three points, Paytin Villarreal three rebounds and Gabby Hermes two rebounds.
