Yuma High School’s girls wrestling team is getting a well-deserved break before entering the postseason.
The Outlaws are off this week before hosting a 4A regional February 13-14 in The Pit.
“With this week off of competition it will be a grind in practice everyday with a lot of drilling and conditioning,” coach Brandon Newton reported. “We have a couple girls with some small injuries so it will help them get healed and ready for next weekend. They are all excited and looking forward to regionals.”
They have time off after a busy stretch last week, including winning the Patriot League Tournament last Friday at Platte Valley in Kersey.
Yuma claimed the team title with 164 points. Fort Morgan was second with 157, Weld Central third with 117.5, Wiggins fourth with 96, and Strasburg fifth with 85. There were 12 schools in the tournament.
Three champions led the way for the Outlaws.
Gese Sanchez won the 190-pound title. It required just two matches. The senior won both by fall, including one in 20 seconds.
Fellow senior Danika Dischner won the 235-pound title. It also required two matches, with Dischner winning both by fall.
Taelynn Robinson won the 100-pound title with a 3-0 record. She started with a 32-second pin, got another win by fall, then finished with a 13-5 major decision.
Heidi Vargas went 1-1 to place second at 110 pounds.
Kenya Arvizo went 2-1 to place second at 120. She won her first two matches by fall before losing her third match.
Tehya McDonald went 2-1 to place third at 135. Maurine Smith was third at 155 with a 2-1 record. Mirella Flores had one win at 115, Haley Smith wrestled at 100 pounds, Dafne Mireles 105, Mirella Flores 115, Jessa Yost 235, and Daphani Allen 125.
The Outlaws completed the regular season Saturday at the big Chatfield Lady War Horse Invitational. They finished 18th out of 30 schools with 65.5 points. Grand Junction Central won the team title with 227.5 points, and Chatfield was second with 147.5.
Sanchez placed second at 190 pounds. She won her first two matches by fall before getting pinned in her third match.
Dischner placed fourth at 235. She went 3-2 on the day, all of her wins coming by fall.
Daphne Allen went 2-2 at 125, Vargas 2-2 at 110, Arvizo 2-2 at 120, H. Smith one win at 100, Yost one win at 235, M. Smith one at 155, Robinson one at 100, and Mireles wrestled at 105.
“I think we did well at Chatfield also but only placing Gese and Danika,” Newton said. “I saw some good things against some good wrestlers, but I also saw some things we need to work on against some good wrestlers. The tournament was perfect timing so we can work on these things before regionals.”
The Outlaws began its busy stretch last Thursday with a dual at Fort Morgan. Newton said the Mustangs have some tough wrestlers that matched up well with the Outlaws. It was a tight match with Yuma losing by 12 points while giving up two forfeits.
“We did see Fort Morgan the next day at the Patriot League and came out on top of them to win the tournament,” Newton said, “so that was a plus since they beat us the night before.”
