It is time to take down the 2025-26 season for the Yuma High School girls wrestling team.
“I think we’re looking pretty good,” coach Brandon Newton said. “A couple of girls are not quite ready yet, so we don’t have our full team, but for the most part everyone is feeling and looking pretty good.”
Newton and his staff have a total of 13 on the team, and only a couple double up at the same weight.
“We’ll fill the majority of the weights, which will be great,” Newton said. “We’ll be a better dual team than we were last year.”
The Outlaws open the season today, December 4, in The Pit with a dual against Wray at 5:30 p.m. Newton said it was looking like there would be four or five matches
The girl grapplers then will head to the Arapahoe Invitational on Saturday. Newton said the tournament keeps growing in the number of participating teams and wrestlers, resulting in six or seven mats being utilized at once.
“It’s probably one of our tougher tournaments,” the coach said. “A lot of the upper-class schools go to that one…it’s not ideal for my newer girls, but for my more experienced ones it’s a great way to start out to see how that stack up.”
Gese Sanchez placed at state last season, and Danika Dischner also qualified for state. Sanchez is not quite ready to wrestle yet as she recovers from surgery.
She will be at 190 when she returns. Dischner will wrestle at 235. Haley Smith will be at 100 pounds, Dafne Mireles 110, Heidi Vargas 115, Mirella Flores 120, Kenya Arvizo at 125, Luisa Palacios 130, Tehya McDonald 135, Yatzari Morales 140 and Maurine Smith 155. Morales is not wrestling this week, as well as Jessa Yost at 235, and Kinsley Brandon at 130.
