Cross country keeps excelling

Yuma High School’s cross country teams keep posting impressive numbers during the 2021 season.
The Indians are back at it Friday when they travel to Platte Valley.
Yuma’s runners were at the Brighton Mercury Invitational last week, with both teams posting strong efforts.
The boys finished fourth out of eight schools that had enough runners to post a team score. The Indians had 96 points. Brighton won the team title with 61.
Javier Duran placed seventh out of 83 competitors with a time of 18 minutes, 38.6 seconds. Angel Escobar was 13th in 19:27.5, Jaxson Lungwitz 17th in 19:56.4, Mely Gonzalez 18th in 20:03, and Liam McClaran 44th in 22:32.5 to round out the team scoring. Jaime Montanez placed 56th in 23:59.9, and Angel Ibarra was 73rd in 27:39.6.
Yuma’s girls finished third out of seven schools with a team score. The Indians had 96 points. Brighton won the girls team title also with 27 points.
Hailey Erying placed ninth out of 68 runners with a time of 22:33.3. Ashley Ibanez was 14th in 23:42.8. Samantha Wells was 28th in 26:01.5, Myka McDonald was right behind in 29th in 26:03.7, and Fatima Duran was right there in 30th in 26:28.8 to round out the team scoring. Alyssa Roberts was 40th in 28:13.6, Natalie Jurado 52nd in 31:03.6, Gabriela Varela 53rd in 31:06.6, and Wendy Garcia 54th in 31:07.9.
