Early count shows Yuma-1 enrollment keeps dropping

Early enrollment figures indicate the student population continues to drop in the Yuma-1 schools.

The preliminary numbers as of this past Tuesday, August 26, shows the K-12 enrollment at 748, 15 below last year’s early enrollment report of 763. It is the lowest K-12 enrollment since 2016, which was 775. It was 791 for 2023-24, 822 for 2022-23, 810 in 2021, 846 in 2020, 828 in 2019, 786 in 2018, and 780 in 2017.

There are five grades with 60 or more students, and two in the 40s. The largest class if third grade with 69 students, and the smallest is kindergarten with 45.

However, when figuring in Yuma Preschool, the district’s actually is up a bit at 806. There are 58 students in the preschool compared to just 43 last year. The 806 with pre-K is one above 2024’s 805, but the pre-K-12 figures were 847 in 2023, 886 in 2022, 874 in 2021 and 899 in 2020.

Yuma High School’s enrollment is 224, down from last year’s 231. YHS early enrollment report in 2023 was 249, and it was 265 in 2022 and 254 in 2021. YHS enrollment was as low as 219 in 2016. The YHS enrollment breaks down as follows: ninth grade 53, 10th grade 57, 11th grade 54, and 12th grade 60.

Yuma Middle School, grades 5-8, is showing an early count of 233, an increase from 2024’s 222. The early count in 2023 was 220, and it was 230 in 2022. The YMS breakdown is as follows: Fifth grade 66, sixth grade 53, seventh grade 65, and eighth grade 49.

Morris Elementary School, grades K-4, has the biggest grade and smallest grade in the Yuma schools. Its early enrollment is 291, which is down from 2024’s 309. MES early enrollment was 313 in 2023, 319 in 2022 and 301 in 2021.

The early figures show kindergarten with 45 students, first grade 59, second grade 60, third grade 69 and fourth grade 58.

The official enrollment count will be conducted in October. That figure will be added to previous years for an average enrollment that will be used for state equalization funding.
