Yuma High School’s track and field teams will be hoping for better conditions the competition resumes Saturday.
The Outlaws, and all other local high schools, opened the season last Saturday in the Yuma Early Qualifier. The weather turned out to be cold and windy, though it did get warmer toward the end.
“It was a rough opener for the season with the wind and cold,” head coach Lucas Lubbers said, “but we have a meet under our belt and are excited for the rest of the season. Hoping for some good weather soon.”
They should get it Saturday at the University Bulldogs Invitational in Greeley. The extended forecast earlier this week called for a high in the low 70s, with wind not being a factor. Many other area teams also will be in Greeley.
YHS hosted 13 other schools for the season-opening Yuma Early Qualifier last Saturday.
Yuma’s boys finished third in the team standings with 82.5 points. Holyoke won the team title with 128.5 points, while Sedgwick County had 97. Rounding out the top five were Idalia with 62 and Merino with 59.
The Yuma girls finished fourth with 63 points. Wray won the team title with 121, Sedgwick County second with 109, Merino third with 103, and Holyoke fifth with 53.
Yuma’s boys were paced by several high finishes, but did not win any event.
Bridger Lynch was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.54 seconds, and second in gthe 300 hurdles in 45.3. Edwin Munoz was third in the 110s in 19.41, and Dallas Brunk fourth in the 300s in 48.04.
Jiovani Perez placed third in the 100 dash in 12.86 seconds, and Iann Duran was seventh in 13.13. Alan Flores took third in 800 in 2:22.64, and Liam McClaran fourth in 2:24.38. Flores also was third in the 1600 in 5:18.92. Duran took fourth in the 200 in 25.02 seconds, Noe Quezada fifth in 25.08, and Cesar Gamboa eighth in 25.31. David Covarrubias was eighth in the 400 in 1:00.69.
In the field events, Cristian Duarte took second in the long jump with a distance of 18-foot-11.25. He was fourth in the triple jump at 37-9, and Covarrubias was eighth at 33-5. Munoz cleared 5-4 for third in the high jump.
The pole vault was not held. The only relay the boys were in was the 4-by-100 throwers relay but the team was disqualified.
Yuma’s girls had placing efforts in several open running events.
Braylynn Armstrong was second in the 300 hurdles in 56.49. Addison Armstrong was fourth in 58.62, and Jordan Glanz eighth in 1:04.32. Caddis Robinson placed third in the 100 in 14.73 seconds, and Carolina Ross was fifth in 14.9. A. Armstrong was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 20.35. Chloe Smith placed fifth in the 200 in 29.68, Layla Glanz sixth in the 400 in 1:12.6, Myka McDonald sixth in the 1600 in 7:27.82, and Kenya Arvizo seventh in 7:35.81. McDonald placed seventh in the 800 in 3:06.35.
The 4-by-100 throwers relay team of Alina Moran, Lauren Gonzalez, Bailey Nighswonger and Zuleika Parra took first in 1:02.95. The 800 sprint medley team of Smith, Robinson, Ross and Glanz placed third in 2:11.38.
Jade Lungwitz paced the field events by placing second in the triple jump at 31-2.75. Ross was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 13-9, and Emory McClaran eighth at 12-10.75.
