Students in the Yuma schools will return to the classroom on Tuesday, August 11, to begin the 2026-27 school year.
It is one of the earliest beginnings in recent memory. Staff have been involved in professional development days all this week in preparation for the school year.
Classes begin at 7:45 a.m.
Transportation Supervisor Jeanne Yenter asks parents to update their address and phone numbers on Alma if either has changed since last school year.

Yuma High School freshman orientation is Friday, August 7, from 1 to 3 p.m.
There are many back-to-school events on Monday, August 10. Yuma Preschool’s will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Morris Elementary School from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and Yuma Middle School’s will be 3 to 5 p.m. with just fifth-graders from 3 to 3:40, and all grades 3:40 to 5.
YHS and YMS will have a new choir teacher as Krystal Myers has been hired for that role. YHS graduate Savanna Neb has returned to serve as a science teacher at YHS and YMS. Tayte Page is a new math teacher at YHS, as well as eighth-grade math. Also new to YHS is Callie Colden as registrar, and Anna Holguin and Marla Holcomb as paraprofessionals.
Yuma graduate Jada Young returns to be the sixth-grade English teacher at YMS, and Tessa Rhodes is the new seventh-grade English teacher. Andrea Valenzueala joins YMS as a paraprofessional.
Lucas Lubbers has moved from YHS science to be the PE teacher at Morris Elementary. Tanya Bencomo is the new third-grade teacher. Robin Vincent joins MES as a floating instructor, and Diana Vega and Bryar Chrismer are new paraprofessionals.
Also, Sydney Burns is the new PK-8th registrar.
Yuma-1 remains on a four-day school week. While the school year begins Tuesday, students can take heart knowing the last day of school will be May 20, 2027. Graduation for the Class of 2027 will be on May 16, 2027.
• Liberty School will have its first day of school next Wednesday, August 12. Stefanie Bellows is the new grades 4/5 teacher, Dalanee Laybourn joins the staff as Ag teacher and FFA sponsor, and Jordan Weaver is a preschool paraprofessional.
• Students attending the Otis schools will begin the school year on Tuesday, August 18.
• The first day of school for grades 6-12 at Arickaree will be Monday, August 17, and grades K-5 will begin August 24.
• It will be a bit longer before Lone Star begins the new school year as the first day is Tuesday, August 25. Lone Star has maintained its full teaching staff from last school year.
