YHS seniors set athletic milestones

A couple of major personal milestones were achieved last week by Yuma High School athletes.

Brody Sheffield set the single-game scoring record for YHS boys basketball with 41 points at Merino.

Daden Beauprez earned his 100th wrestling win on Friday.

Both are seniors.

Sheffield became the program’s career scoring leader earlier this season, and continues to build on that with each game. His effort last Tuesday, January 27, at Merino broke the previous single-game record of 38 by Justin Coughlin, who did it against Wray in 2008. His 41 points was a model of efficiency. Sheffield made 15 of 23 shots (65 percent), including six of 11 three-pointers (55 percent) and made all five of his free throws. Plus, he had 10 rebounds, nine steals and four assists.

Beauprez has been racking up wins on the mat since his freshman season. He placed third last season in the 2A state tournament. His 100th win last Friday was made even more memorable as his pin of Ogallala’s Kolby Nowak also won him the 190-pound title at the Mitchell Invitational in Nebraska.
