A lot of heat and a little wind helped whip up a difficult-to-fight grass fire, Sunday afternoon southeast of Yuma.
Firefighters from the Yuma Volunteer Fire Department spent most of four hours battling the blaze, along with the Eckley, Vernon and Joes fire departments, as well as the Otis sending over its big water truck.

A 77-year-old Yuma man was arrested last week on suspicion of sexual assault on a child.
Harvey Josh, who lives at 1014 S. Buffalo St., was taken into custody by the Yuma Police Department last Wednesday, September 1, for felony sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

The Yuma Community Foundation has set a deadline of October 8 to receive written applications for grants for the 2010 cycle.
All grants must be submitted in writing, and each applicant must submit eight copies, one for each Foundation board member. See the applications for qualifications.

It did not take long for the smoke from the Four Mile Canyon fire west of Boulder to reach Yuma, as evidenced by these photos taken by Dave Gustafson (left) and Jason Hawley (right). These photos were taken late afternoon on Labor Day, September 6. The fire had begun that morning, burning thousands of mountain acres, destroying some structures and a firefighting vehicle, and threatening many more structures. Strong winds quickly blew the smoke east. Yuma is about 150 miles or more east of the fire.

The Morris Elementary and Yuma Middle School staffs are pictured above with Principal Donna Fields holding the Yuma-1 Gainmaker Award, which was presented to the staff during training prior to the start of the school year. The staff has won the award for three out of four years. It goes to the school staff whose students show the most improvement on student achievement tests.

Early enrollment counts indicate that Yuma School District-1 is experiencing an increase for the first time in six years.
Figures released earlier this week by the district show a K-12 student population of 799, well above last year's early K-12 count of 768, and even above the 2008 count of 796. It breaks a five-year trend of dropping enrollment in Yuma-1.
