Yuma High School sophomore Alexander Weathers is headed back to the Class 2A State Tournament, which will be held Monday and Tuesday in Pueblo.
The list of the 84 qualifiers was released Tuesday. It used to be golfers qualified through a one-day regional tournament. CHSAA changed the format beginning this year to take the top 84 based on results throughout the season. Weathers was well inside the top 84 so his inclusion was expected.
It is the second year in a row in which he will be in the 2A tournament.
He also placed second in the League Championships held last Thursday at Sky Ranch in Sterling. Weathers shot an 82 to lead the Outlaws. His performance moved him from seventh to second place in the final league standings. He finished fourth as a freshman.
Junior Carter Benish shot a 103, his second-best round of the season. Sophomore Charlie Oestman shot his best varsity round with a 104. Sophomore Orly Lynch finished with 110, and freshman Braxton Metcalfe a 111.
Oestman and Esteban Ovalle played in the rain in Holyoke last Tuesday. The players were provided pizza and hot chocolate, and organizers also had a tent with a heater set up on the course to help the players dry off. It was a fun experience for them.
