Lone Star girls back in Sweet 16

The Lone Star girls basketball team is in the Class 1A playoffs for the second straight season.
The Longhorns reached the Sweet 16 last year, and were one half away from a Great 8 berth when Fleming rallied in the second half. They have another opportunity today, March 11, as the Longhorns play at second-seed Kit Carson after Tuesday night’s first-round win over Kiowa.
Lone Star finished the regular season 9-4, and won the YKWC League regular season title for the second straight year. The Longhorns are the 15th seed in the 24-team playoff field.

They opened at home this past Tuesday night with a 64-52 home win over 18th-seed Kiowa. The game was tight in the early going, with Lone Star leading 27-26 at halftime. However, they opened it up in the second half to pull away to the victory.
Now comes a big challenge today at Kit Carson. The Wildcats bring a 13-0 record into the Sweet 16 game. The winner advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals against seventh-seed Dove Creek or 10th seed McClave.
Lone Star closed out the regular season last weekend, going 1-1. The Longhorns hosted Fleming, the sixth seed in

1A, on Friday, suffering a 45-36 loss. They trailed just 32-29 after three quarters, but Fleming was able to pull away for the win down the stretch.

The Longhorns closed out the regular season Saturday by hosting Weldon Valley, cruising to a 41-8 win. They led 21-5 by halftime, and held the Warriors to just four points over the final three quarters.
